WHAT WE SAY:

It is an oversimplification to call moulded fibre a commodity product. But if your requirements are less technical and you do not need an especially bespoke product, then you could do a lot worse than sourcing your packaging from World Centric.

This US-based packaging supplier has been a B Corp since before it was commonplace and gives 25% of its profits – over USD 1.5 million in 2022 – to nonprofits and social enterprises.

ABOUT WORLD CENTRIC

  • World Centric is a US-based compostable products company creating solutions for the food and beverage industry including, cups, trays, bowls, plates, cutlery and more.
  • The company uses renewable plants, such as bamboo, sugarcane, bagasse and wheat grass to create its products.
  • Founded in 2004, it started selling fairtrade and compostable products in an effort to support its original goal of raising awareness of large-scale humanitarian and environmental issues.
  • However, by 2009, founder Aseem Das decided to make the sale of compostable products the company’s focus, and it converted from a taxable non-profit to a for-profit social enterprise.
  • Since then, World Centric donates 25% of its profits each year to support projects that promote social and economic development, environmental education and waste reduction.
  • During 2022, World Centric is rolling out its PFAS-free coating, Leaf+, across all of its Moulded fibre products. The solution provides oil and grease resistance to temperatures up to 93°C (200°F).
  • World Centric’s raw materials include bamboo, sugarcane, bagasse, wheat straw, corn and paper from sustainably harvested trees; the company’s wood-based products are all FSC-certified.
  • The company currently makes most of its products in Asia, although the company has stated that it is looking at on-shoring production to the US to reduce emissions.
  • World Centric’s products are all certified compostable under the ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868 standards by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), USDA BioPreferred Programme and the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA).
  • World Centric offers customisable design and printing services, so that brands can produce solutions that directly target their audiences.
  • Custom designs typically take a 16-week lead time and cost between USD 5,000-25,000.
  • For custom printed products, minimum order quantities typically range from 50,000-200,000 pieces per custom print.
  • The company has been a Certified B Corporation since 2010.
