WHAT WE SAY:

75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today and global recycling rates are as high as 76%.

Aluminium is a true all-rounder and in the hands of Tubex, the material’s horizons are wide open. The veteran aluminium packaging company is innovating for the future with solutions, like recycled, recyclable mono-material tubes and closed-loop packaging. Although it currently only has two core ranges in its repertoire, we think its holistic, boundary-pushing approach to design will help call time on single-use plastics.

ABOUT TUBEX

  • Tubex has been manufacturing Aluminium tubes for more than 70 years, specialising in the cosmetics, food, pharma and industrial sectors.
  • A shining example of its innovative approach is the Monotube, produced with 100% recycled aluminium, 95% of which is PCR. It features a snap-off aluminium nozzle which, when turned over and reinserted into the tube, functions as a closure, avoiding the use of tamper seals or plastic caps.
  • The Monotube was adopted by Ren Clean Skincare and won the ETMA Tube of the Year award in 2021.
  • The other core collection in Tubex’s product line is the Blue Tube range, a circular solution, which is compliant with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. The original Blue Tube is made from 100% post-industrial waste, using a specially developed alloy. Blue Tube Evo is made from 95% post-consumer and 5% post-industrial recycled aluminium. Using up to 15% less aluminium, Tubex claims the Evo reduces emissions by up to 70%. A lighter weight tube also provides an improved restitution rate of 97%, reducing product waste.
  • L’Occitane pledged to replace all of its aluminium tubes with the Blue Tube Evo by the end of 2021.
  • Research shows that using recycled aluminium saves 95% of the energy compared to manufacturing virgin aluminium. To calculate further environmental impact savings, Tubex has created a carbon calculator tool, built with peer-reviewed LCA data, which conforms with ISO 14040 and 11044. The tool enables brands and designers to compare the carbon footprint of their aluminium tube options with Blue Tubes.
  • Tubex offers a range of solutions dependent on end-use. Tubes can feature up to eight colours, ranging in size from 11 millimetres (two millilitres), up to 50 millimetres (350 millilitres).
  • The company is headquartered in Vienna, Austria and based across six sites in Europe, including Wolfsberg, Austria; Zarnovica, Slovakia; Ulyanovka, Russia; Milan, Italy and Munich, Germany. In April 2022, Tubex acquired Hungarian packaging manufacturer Mátrametál, which will give the company capacity to create 1.6 billion aluminium tubes across seven production sites.
  • Today the company serves 76 territories, has 36 production lines across seven locations globally and employs over 1,000 people. Its 650 active customers include L'Oréal, Ren Skincare, Chanel, Marmetube, Felix and L’Occitane.
  • Tubex is part of the CAG Holding group, which includes glass, plastics and aluminium manufacturers, such as Bio Energy Group, C-Care, Neuman Aluminium Industries, Prefa and Stözle Glass Group.
  • The company has committed to setting science-based targets via the Science Based Targets initiative. Tubex's targets will be presented for validation and approval in the first half of 2022.
  • It is targeting a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (aligned with the 1.5°C ambition of the Paris Agreement) and Scope 3 emissions reductions of 25% by 2030 (aligned with the “well below 2°C" ambition). Both targets are against a 2020 baseline. Emissions reductions activities will include a 100% shift to renewable energy, making 75% of tubes from PCR aluminium, lightweight design and the promotion of circularity within the industry.
  • EcoVadis awarded Tubex a Gold rating for its sustainability and CSR performance in May 2022. This puts Tubex in the top five percent of companies assessed by EcoVadis.
