The pandemic has seen many Asian cities flooded with millions upon millions of single-use items, in the quest for hygiene and security. Hong Kong is no exception, which is why we are encouraged to see that local businesses are not just raising awareness of the problem, but offering practical solutions.

Sustainabl. produces moulded fibre products for the foodservice industry and its partnership with Deliveroo is helping to get its bowls, trays and more in the hands of customers in Hong Kong.

ABOUT SUSTAINABL

Sustainbl. is a Hong Kong-based startup creating a range of food packaging made from Moulded Fibre, Paper and Bamboo paper.
Founded in 2019, the company’s main product is Refibr, a moulded fibre solution made from sugarcane and wheat agricultural waste.
The company reports that its products are all compliant with the Hong Kong government’s single-use plastic ban, due to come into force in 2025.
Furthermore, the company claims that all of its products are both home and commercially compostable, although it does not offer any formal certifications. Its products are also recyclable in Hong Kong’s paper waste stream.
All of Sustainabl.’s products are suitable for hot and cold food products and are microwaveable and freezer safe. No coating is used across the products.
Sustainbl. is Deliveroo’s partner in a HKD 2 million (USD 254,000) initiative that looks to encourage restaurants in Hong Kong to drop single-use plastic and switch to sustainable packaging.
Other clients include Hong Kong’s Grand Hyatt hotel, Hong Kong’s Fullerton Hotels and virtual food hall Kin, for which it provides coffee cups, bags, pizza boxes and more.
