WHAT WE SAY:

Microplastics within our personal care products are the invisible pollutants of our ocean and soil. Plastic is added to improve the feel, thickness and slip of the product - a short-lived enhancement for centuries of pollution.

Good news then that Seppic is dedicating resources, to pioneer plastic-free ingredients, to replace the industry norms. It is worth checking out Ban The Microbeads app to find out which products are truly plastic-free formulas.

ABOUT SEPPIC

  • Seppic has developed and manufactured ingredients for the cosmetic, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and veterinary industries for 75 years.
  • It currently has 770 employees in 14 countries, serving 6,000 customers in 100 countries. There is a global network of 80 distributors and agents, and four customer technical service centres.
  • The global company produces a range of products, but is particularly well-known for creating bio-based, readily biodegradable, plastic-free beauty ingredients.
  • Plastic-free ingredients within its beauty care range include Sepimax Zen and Sepiplus K, which are both non-microplastic polymers. Sepimax Zen is a thickening, stabilising and texturising powder polymer, which can be used in face and bodycare, suncare, haircare, make-up, and hygiene categories, while Sepiplus K is a rheological modifier or thickener, which can be used in face and bodycare, suncare, haircare and make-up.
  • Further plastic-free ingredients include Sepinov EMT 10, a thickening, stabilising, texturising powder polymer ideal for baby products; Sepilife Nude, an emulsifying polymer; and Simulgel, a squalene-based thickening polymer.
  • Bolstering the plastic-free status of a wide-range of its ingredients are certifications, including Natrue, Cosmos, Ecocert, Excipact and Mass Balance. It also complies with standards, listings and regulations, such as ISO 16128, ISO 9001:2015, and IECIC 2021. In 2021, it was awarded platinum status by EcoVadis.
  • Headquartered in Paris, Seppic manufactures across five sites in France, the US and China. The company’s Virginia, US, plant was designed with a zero-waste and emissions objective, and was expanded with a USD 60 million investment in 2021, providing 50% more production capacity for thickening and texturising agents. Its largest site in Castres, France has 26 manufacturing units, managing its environmental impact with water pre-treatment, waste sorting and gas-discharge units, while its Chinese plant, spanning 5,512 square metres, is ISO 9001 and Gmp Excipact-certified.
  • Alongside recycling approximately 95% of waste produced, Seppic claims it decreased its water consumption by 16% between 2019 and 2020, and recycled 20% of wastewater effluents to feed its steam boilers.
  • Products, which are plastic-free, bio-based, and inherently and readily biodegradable make up a significant portion of Seppic’s most recent releases and 100 employees are dedicated solely to innovation. 175 patent families are currently in force and the company files a further 10-15 each year.
