WHAT WE SAY:

Moulded fibre, especially when using renewable feedstocks and agri-waste, has the potential to replace huge volumes of plastic packaging. It can also help shoppers switch to a permanent packaging system, just dropping in pre-filled pods into glass or metal containers.

Papacks is pioneering very interesting innovations. Production at scale and speed is everything when targeting a viable price, especially when trying to produce fibre bottles. And of course the coatings required must be plastic-free and toxin-free. We think Papacks is one to watch.

ABOUT PAPACKS

  • Founded in 2013 by Tahsin Dag, and headquartered in Germany, moulded fibre expert Papacks researches and develops a range of climate-neutral and sustainable packaging.
  • It claims to have saved 3.5 million kilograms of plastic to date, replacing it with paper fibre and natural raw materials.
  • With offices in Cologne, Prague and New York City, and manufacturing facilities across Germany and The Netherlands, Papacks offers a range of transport trays, product packaging in-lays, primary food packaging, and pharma, medical and cosmetics packaging.
  • Recent innovations include the prototyping of Papack’s Fibre Bottles for Keurig Dr Pepper and The Beauty Loop refillable capsules for cosmetics. Note, however, that a prototype can be quite far from real production at scale.
  • The company invested EUR 10 million (USD 10.9 million) in its GigaFactory 1 in 2020, based in Germany. It produces food-safe and medical packaging with a capacity of 180 million pieces per year. The company is opening its GigaFactory 2 in 2023, which is set to double production capacity.
  • A Papacks case study shows that replacing plastic trays with moulded fibre trays (made from secondary raw material) for tertiary cosmetics transport packaging removes 892 tons of fossil fuels and reduces CO2 emissions by 6,100 tons a year.
  • All of Papack’s packaging solutions are home-compostable and BRCGS and FSC-certified.
  • Current Papacks clients include ChupaChups, Keurig Dr Pepper, Bayer and Bushplanet Gruppe.
  • The company holds more than 57 international patents for products, technologies and manufacturing processes, including barrier coatings, tray concepts and material processes.
  • Papacks is the recipient of multiple industry awards including a 2022 WorldStar Global Packaging Award and 2021 Deutscher Verpackungspreis award. It recently won a Bronze Award for Sustainability at the 2022 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards and a Dieline Plastic Free Packaging Award 2022.
