Eco-cynics might dismiss it as selling brightly coloured status symbol loungewear to Hollywood celebrities. However, we prefer to focus on its innovative philosophy from clothing to food – especially its steady stream of innovative collaborations with many of our favourite material innovators, from Natural Fiber Welding to Spiber to Infinna and more. Furthermore, its brilliant design always packs a punch – making Pangaia a plastic-free pioneer that every designer should be watching closely.

ABOUT PANGAIA

  • Pangaia is a material science company founded in 2018 that seeks out alternative resources to create sustainable products.
  • The brand name, Pangaia, is created from variations on ancient Greek. 'Pan,' meaning all-inclusive and 'Gaia,' meaning Mother Earth.
  • The company is hard to pigeonhole, with its novel products and sustainable wardrobe essentials coming from a mix of brand collaborations, with other material startups and in-house product development.
  • Since being founded in 2018, by entrepreneur and investor Miroslava Duma, Pangaia has welcomed further co-founders, with a broad range of backgrounds, including AR specialist Jasmine Mullers, investment banking expert Nathalie Longuet and VR specialist Rachna Bhasin.
  • The company prides itself on its diverse team, employing approximately 200 people from a variety of scientific, technology and design backgrounds. One example of this is Enrico Cozzoni, head of the Pangaia lab in Florence, who previously worked in Aerospace Engineering.
  • The company was founded in 2018 and began trading in 2019. Despite its youth, rapid scaling and celebrity endorsement meant it generated revenues of USD 75 million in 2020.
  • Pangaia has raised an undisclosed sum through three rounds of funding, with its latest funding raised in 2021. Current investors include Regeneration VC, who specialise in investing in climate innovations that are powered by circularity and regenerative design.
  • While its primary operations are focused on its D2C retail business, in 2022 the company launched Pangaia Lab, a platform aimed at supporting other material science innovators. Its first product launch was a pair of sunglasses, in collaboration with Twelve, with lenses made partially with captured CO2.
  • The company’s Pangaia Science division is its B2B arm, which operates a material licensing model, enabling other fashion brands to use its innovative sustainable materials.
  • In March 2022, the brand announced the launch of Pangaia Health, a range of superfoods. The first bar to market is the ‘Super Super Bar,’ made from a range of nutrient-rich ingredients. Pangaia claims the bar, and its packaging, is carbon neutral, compostable and supports biodiversity.
