WHAT WE SAY:

Cellulose might be the world’s most abundant organic compound, but extracting it from trees requires time, energy and chemicals.

Plus, of course, we need our trees more than ever. Nanollose, an Australian biotech startup, promises a radically more efficient solution – growing microbial cellulose in weeks, from food waste. It is an exciting prospect, even if the company has only made a single prototype garment.

ABOUT NANOLLOSE

  • Founded in 2014, Nanollose is an Australian biotechnology company that works with microbial cellulose from industrial organic and agricultural waste, rather than trees.
  • The company has two branded innovations: Nullarbor lyocell fibre for clothing, and Jelli Grow – an alternative seed germination and plant growing material. It is also working on Nufolium – a rayon fibre for use in non-woven applications.
  • The company uses fermentation to produce microbial Cellulose from liquid organic waste streams, initially coconut waste sourced from Indonesia.
  • In January 2021, Nanollose signed a joint patent application with Indian manufacturing company Grasim Industries for its Nullarbor fibre. Grasim is owned by the Aditya Birla Group, one of the world’s largest man-made cellulosic fibre producers. The companies plan to scale production in order to facilitate commercial agreements with fashion brands.
  • The patent application came a year after Nanollose and Grasim signed a collaboration agreement to exclusively develop and commercialise both Nullarbor and Nufolium.
  • In May 2022, the company entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Inditex to supply the fashion giant with samples of its tree-free lyocell fibre for testing and evaluation.
  • Nanollose’s first pilot production in February 2022 led to the creation of 250 kilograms of Nullarbor-20 Forest-Friendly fibre, which was made from a blend of 20% microbial cellulose and 80% conventional wood pulp.
  • The first Nullarbor garment made completely from microbial cellulose was designed by Lee Mathews and unveiled at the Copenhagen Global Fashion Summit in June 2022.
  • The company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in October 2017, raising AUD 5 million (USD 3.5 million) from investors for investment in its supply chain.
