WHAT WE SAY:

Paper and cardboard have been limited in their packaging uses over the years, relegated to simple boxes that often need coatings, liners, tapes and glue to provide the strength and structure required.

Mondi is rethinking this natural material, playing with layers, construction, pack-fit dimensions and dead-space reduction to eliminate the need for protective plastic packaging. Its size and scale ensures these innovations can change the food, beverage, cosmetic, personal and healthcare industries quickly, and disrupt the narrative on paper for good.

ABOUT MONDI

  • Mondi is an international packaging and Paper group, employing around 26,000 people, at over 100 production sites, across 30 countries. Mondi operations are predominantly based in Europe, Russia, North America and South Africa.
  • The company is a leading producer of both paper and plastic-based raw materials. The group manages forests, produces paper, pulp and films, and develops and manufactures end-product industrial and consumer packaging solutions.
  • One key feature of Mondi’s work is its claimed commitment to sustainability. Through its on-site circularity model, Mondi recycles over one million tonnes of paper in its processes every year. For context, the UK uses 9.9 million tonnes of paper every year.
  • In the 2022 WorldStar packaging awards, Mondi won nine awards for its sustainably focused products - CoralTray, EcoWicketBag, Functional Barrier Paper, SoapPackaging, ToolBox XL, TwistMailer, (Un)-Lock System, WalletPack and X-Fold Box.
  • SoapPackaging is a bespoke, ships-in-own-container pack that can protect fragile products in transit without the need for a secondary box. The CoralTray is a fully recyclable, purely paper tray for vegetables, while The (Un)-Lock System is a two-piece cardboard pack that locks together, allowing it to be lifted securely from above without the need for glue or tape.
  • Mondi has recently collaborated with Unilever on its 100% recyclable, paper-based pouches for the Colman’s Meal Makers range. This new solution is able to be collected kerbside in the UK for recycling, with the paper and cardboard waste stream.
  • Other notable brands already working with Mondi’s paper packaging solutions include: Tyme, the food delivery service, who adopted the BCoolBox in 2022 and UK frozen supermarket chain Iceland, who packages its chicken dippers in Mondi’s functional barrier paper. The paper has enabled Iceland to reduce the product’s use of plastic by 80%.
  • Mondi’s 2030 Action Plan (MAP2030) is its in-house commitment to sustainability, which focuses on three areas; circular driven solutions, empowering people and climate action. Mondi has aligned its business to seven UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including responsible consumption and production. Targets for MAP2030 include ensuring 100% of Mondi’s products are reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 and eliminating waste to landfill from manufacturing.
  • Mondi’s targets for reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions is 72% by 2050. It has recently committed to net zero by 2050. These should be viewed in contrast with Mondi’s operations in South Africa, where it has previously been highlighted as one of the largest users of electricity in Durban, supplied from coal-fired power plants.
  • For the sixth year in a row, Mondi has retained its platinum status in the EcoVadis Corporate Social Responsibility ratings with a score of 85%. This rating places Mondi in the top 1% of companies globally for sustainability.
  • In 2021 alone, Mondi generated revenues of EUR 7.7 billion (USD 7.5 billion) with an underlying EBITDA of EUR 1.5 billion (USD 1.47 billion).
  • In response to the recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Mondi has suspended operations at its Ukrainian plant in Lviv. However, citing economic and legal reasons (Mondi earns 12% of its revenue in Russia), it has not withdrawn from Russia. Approximately EUR 924 million (USD 910 million) of Mondi’s 2021 revenue was generated in Russia. In response to the conflict, Mondi has pledged EUR 1 million (USD 985,000) - an estimated 0.1% of its Russian revenue - to the United Nations World Food Programme’s emergency operation.
