WHAT WE SAY:

When responsibly sourced, paper is already seen by consumers and the industry as a sustainable packaging material, but US-based premium paper manufacturer Mohawk pushes this responsibility to new heights.

Having worked on creative projects with the likes of Adobe and Pinterest, the company is most known for its high quality paper solutions that play with texture, colour, and form. Perhaps lesser known is its use of renewable fibres, water reuse and clean energy promotion. It is also the first US paper manufacturer to use renewable wind power at its mills. Mohawk proves that sustainability does not have to equate to less desirable – another old myth that must be debunked.

ABOUT MOHAWK

  • Founded in 1930s New York, Mohawk started its life as a paper mill during the Great Depression and is now one of the largest premium paper makers in the US. Clients have included Max Mara, Bobbi Brown, Mob Beauty, and Equinox Fitness Spa and Clubs, among others.
  • The company caters to designers, brand-owners and printers, across 60 countries, with offset and digital printing for reports, notebooks, packaging, stationary, magazines and books. It has more than 800 employees and offers five paper and envelope collections, including the Sustainable Collection and Mohawk Renewal.
  • Mohawk claims it was one of the first paper companies to experiment with PCR fibres in the 90s and the first to receive Green Seal certification and use renewable wind power for its mills in the 2000s.
  • In 2020, Mohawk pushed its feedstocks even further with the release of the Renewal portfolio. Part of the Sustainable Collection, the Paper range is made from three core fibres - hemp, straw and recycled cotton. These feedstocks were chosen because they can either regenerate within a year or they are a byproduct of another industry and would otherwise be burned or scrapped. Thousands of acres of straw are burned each year after wheat harvesting, for example, releasing carbon into the atmosphere.
  • Other sustainable solutions include Mohawk Loop, a collection of high PCR-content papers (between 50% and 100%), available in a range of print surfaces and a palette of whites, pastels, jewel tones, and earthy fibred shades.
  • Mohawk does not own or manage forest land and does not engage in timber harvesting, direct forest procurement or wood processing. Instead, it sources pulp from FSC-certified suppliers for its paper production, which use majority recycled fibres, as well as other renewable materials.
  • Today, all of the electricity used in Mohawk’s manufacturing operations is matched with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from Green-e certified wind power projects. This means the company matches 100% of electricity used within its facilities with a renewable energy source, making it carbon neutral.
  • At Mohawk, water is also continually recycled for reuse throughout its mills and kept free from damaging elemental chlorine. Similarly, air emissions have been capped at a set level and remain that way regardless of production increases.
  • Although Mohawk is a private company, commercial data analytics firm Dun & Bradstreet suggests its latest annual revenue reached USD 231.64 million.
