WHAT WE SAY:

When one of the leading cosmetic packaging providers in the APAC region pivots its attention towards a plastic-free future, we watch with bated breath.

Meiyume’s newfound focus on sustainable beauty solutions is pretty impressive. 90% of its innovation revenue is now dedicated to the sector - a number far and above many of its competitors - and its innovations are not trying to reinvent the wheel either. A champion of traditional materials, from aluminium to glass, Meiyume is utilising both material swaps and systems change solutions to reduce the industry’s impact, but it needs said industry’s leaders to adopt its solutions to scale.

ABOUT MEIYUME

  • Meiyume, originally known as LF Beauty and part of the Hong Kong-based Fung Group, is a 44-year-old global manufacturing company readopting traditional materials to reimagine beauty packaging.
  • Rebranded in 2018, the company took the opportunity to push its sustainable beauty solutions strategy and now focuses 90% of its innovation and incubation on recyclable, reusable innovations, championing the benefits of Aluminium, glass and paper-based packaging.
  • Recent launches include its low-impact Infinite Aluminium range, a collection of cosmetic bottles and jars made from aluminium, chosen for its infinite recyclability, while its plastic-free Moulded Pulp range enables brands to create mono-material makeup palettes. The company’s recyclable, 100% aluminium lipstick case takes inspiration from the first metal lipstick case created and uses a patented ‘smart click system’ to push the product out of the bullet without needing a plastic twist mechanism.
  • Other sustainably-focused launches include a Smart Refill System, which reduces plastic weight by 52% and the Serenity Glass Range.
  • The company became a member of the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics (SPICE) in 2021, which was launched by L’Oréal and Quantis in May 2018 to facilitate collaboration and drive sustainable packaging forwards. Meiyume is in the process of developing a database of sustainable materials and since 2019 has obtained six patents and brought 43 new conceptual packaging solutions to life.
  • In its latest published company profile (2020), Meiyume reported over 2,000 employees, 1,248 global suppliers and 1,136 customers. It operates from 11 offices across North America, Europe and Asia, with five manufacturing facilities (UK, US, China, Thailand and Indonesia). Key customers include: Puig, Shiseido, Superdrug, AmorePacific and Coty.
  • Meiyume listed a strong 2020 economic performance, with a revenue of USD 472 million, across four regions (Asia, UK, US, Europe). Asia recorded the highest revenue of just under USD 250 million.
  • Meiyume can cater to companies of different sizes, creating packaging with small MOQs or designing and engineering bespoke solutions for mass production, across its five manufacturing facilities. It can mix beauty formulations in bulk, ranging from 5 to 8000 kilograms, and it can facilitate both mixing and filling in-house.
