WHAT WE SAY:

Big brands like H&M, Zara and Calvin Klein are queuing up to partner with, and secure access to, Infinited Fiber Company’s Infinna fibre. Why?

Because it promises to enable a more circular fashion system – where post-consumer textile waste can be turned into virgin-quality, cotton-like fibres. We love the concept, but like many of these exciting circular materials startups, we’re waiting impatiently for the day when these big brands start replacing polyester with Infinna in their biggest collections.

ABOUT INFINITED FIBER COMPANY

  • Infinited Fibre Company (IFC) is a Finnish startup focused on textile circularity.
  • Its Infinna technology can turn Cellulose-rich raw materials into virgin-quality textile fibres with the look and feel of Cotton.
  • Currently, the company uses mainly textile waste as its input, but the process can also use Paper and cardboard, as well as agricultural waste.
  • In June 2021, IFC closed its EUR 30 million (USD 29 million) Series B, led by H&M’s venture capital arm; the company has raised EUR 44 million (USD 42 million) in total, including from Adidas and Bestseller.
  • In May 2022, Inditex committed to purchase 30% of IFC’s annual production volume from 2024, following the opening of its commercial-scale factory. The deal is worth a reported EUR 100 million (USD 96 million).
  • In June 2022, the company announced that for its first commercial-scale production facility it would be taking over a disused paper mill at Stora Enso’s Veitsiluoto industrial site in Kemi, Finland.
  • IFC will invest EUR 400 million (USD 385 million) in the site, with production set to be 30,000 tonnes by 2025. The current global production of MMCFs is 6.5 million tonnes, which itself is less than 6% of the 109 million tonnes of fibre produced annually.
  • As well as its own production facilities, IFC also offers partners the ability to license its technology, which can be retrofitted into existing pulp and Viscose factories.
  • The company’s technology is central to the New Cotton Project, a three-year, EU-funded project run by Fashion for Good which launched in October 2020.
