WHAT WE SAY:

Evrnu’s vision – being able to repeatedly recycle consumer textile waste, while improving the fibre quality – would transform the fashion industry.

However, we hope that the company is on the cusp of a radical acceleration. While its technology is highly promising, taking five years to move from its initial big brand prototypes to commercial product simply won’t bring us the level of change we need fast enough. Let’s hope much, much more is just around the corner.

ABOUT EVRNU

  • Evrnu aims to create a circular fashion system by enabling the recycling at scale of the major fibres used in the industry, including Cotton and Cellulose-based fibres (as well as polyester and elastane, which we are less enthusiastic about).
  • Evrnu claims its technology, NuCycl, is able to depolymerise post-consumer textile waste, and repolymerise it into fibres that are of an equal, or even higher, quality than its input feedstocks. For example, its first fibre – a recycled Lyocell fibre made from cotton waste – is stronger than conventional polyester or other man-made virgin cellulosic fibres.
  • Thanks to its “regenerative fibre technologies”, the materials can subsequently be recycled themselves multiple times, which is one of the key current barriers to widespread textile recycling.
  • After early pilots with Stella McCartney x Adidas and Levis, the company’s first mainstream commercial product is a 100% NuCycl t-shirt made by Carlos Campos, which launched in April 2022.
  • Evernu was founded in 2014 by Stacy Flynn, a sustainable systems specialist, and Christopher Stanev, a textile innovations specialist; the pair previously held technical materials roles at Nike, Gloria Jeans, Target, DuPont and Eddie Bauer.
  • At the time of writing, Evrnu had raised USD 24 million from investors including The Mills Fabrica Fund, Closed Loop Partners and Bestseller.
  • Announcing its USD 15 million Series B in November 2021, the company said it was planning to scale its NuCycl fibre regeneration platform by licensing its technology to pulp and fibre mills.
  • Headquartered in Seattle in the US, Evrnu currently operates in six global regions including the US, Canada, UK, India, Switzerland and Germany.
  • Evrnu is a B Corp and was recognised in Fast Company's 2018 World Changing Idea Awards.
