WHAT WE SAY:

With over a century of experience, Cullen is well-versed in producing plastic-free biodegradable packaging, but in recent years the company has doubled down on its sustainability efforts.

By using offcuts from its corrugated packaging and turning them into moulded pulp, the family-run company has closed the loop, turning waste into a valuable resource. Plus, the ready-for-market dry fibre bottle, which has emerged from the circular system, has the potential to prevent the use of millions of plastic bottles. Cullen is a shining example of what happens when system change and great design meet, and we hope other manufacturers follow suit.

ABOUT CULLEN

  • Cullen was founded as a box-making company in 1921 by Robert Cullen. It specialised in packaging for whisky brands and corrugated cardboard before diversifying into Moulded Fibre in 2001.
  • Now branded as Cullen Eco-Friendly Packaging, its corrugated and moulded fibre solutions can be found in every supermarket, and in over 34 countries worldwide. Applications for its packaging are in the medical, produce, food and takeout sector, industrial and retail, to name just a few.
  • The Scottish company makes all products at its Glasgow-based 14-acre manufacturing site and its products can be seen protecting new vacuum cleaners and computers, holding produce in every major supermarket and carrying takeaway coffee cups. It’s also the leading supplier of moulded fibre consumables to the medical sector, selling 147 million pieces to 98% of UK hospitals in 2020 alone.
  • As a corrugated packaging manufacturer, Cullen has established an on-site, closed-loop recycling system. It uses the offcuts from its corrugated packaging production, along with recycled newspaper, to make fibre pulp and vacuum forms it using a wet press.
  • Over one billion plastic-free products have been produced since 2020.
  • As well as producing off-the-shelf products, Cullen supplies bespoke packaging, offering a consultation service and creating tooling to fit specific design requirements. Cullen can replace most single-use plastic packaging with a moulded fibre alternative within one month.
  • In May 2022, Cullen launched the Cullen Fibre Bottle for dry goods and solids such as vitamins, herbs, spices, powders and household cleaning goods. Customers can choose between snap-off or resealable closures, available in a natural finish or dyed to reflect brand palettes.
  • Other innovations in its portfolio include its drinks protection range, with solutions such as Clinker and Safansound offering moulded fibre protection for shipping individual or multiple drinks bottles in various shapes and sizes. Another innovation, beerGUARD, can safeguard up to 12 bottles or cans thanks to its universal design.
  • All of Cullen’s products are 100% plastic-free and can be collected kerbside for recycling.
  • The company produces over 30 million square metres of corrugated packaging per year, and 470 million pieces of moulded fibre packaging per year.
  • In 2017, Cullen expanded its moulded fibre capacity with a 20,000 square foot warehouse extension, and a 15,000 square foot loading yard. It now has 15 production lines and in 2022, the company announced a further GBP 15 million (USD 17.6 million) expansion. The investment will add five more production lines, increasing its moulded fibre manufacturing capacity by 45%.
  • The new manufacturing facility will bring Cullen’s capacity to over one billion plastic-free products per year.
  • The company’s produce packaging is certified by BRCGS for use as food-grade packaging, and its EU certification EN 13432 confirms each product is certified for industrial compostability.
  • Cullen also provides chain of custody information for the paper-based products in its corrugated factory and all Paper used is FSC-certified.
