WHAT WE SAY:

Metal manufacturers are back in the spotlight as brands seek ways to move away from plastic without increasing their carbon footprint through weighty material swaps.

Crown has dedicated its business to metal packaging for decades, recognising that plastic was not the answer to our packaging needs long before the rest of us. From improving metal recycling rates and recycled content use, through to promoting the benefits of traceable and transparent supply chains, Crown is bringing metal packaging into the 21st century.

ABOUT CROWN

  • Crown is a US company with a long history of making metal drinks and food cans, aerosol containers and speciality packaging. Founded in 1892 with the invention of a crowned cap for bottled drinks, the company moved into the Tin can business in 1936 and has been expanding its portfolio into other segments ever since.
  • Catering to the food and drink, health and beauty, household, and luxury goods markets, the company exited the plastics industry in 2006 with the sale of Global Plastic Closure and now solely focuses on metal products. The company claims it is the second biggest producer of beverage cans around the world.
  • Crown’s dedication to circularity is evident through its Twentyby30 initiative that outlines 20 key goals it will achieve by 2030, split into five key areas: Climate Action, Resource Efficiency, Optimum Circularity, Working Together and Never Compromise.
  • The Optimum Circularity pillar focuses on material use, and includes the reduction of packaging material use by 10% through lightweight design, supporting increased metal recycling rates in major markets, and improving industry-wide recycled content quality and access. Targets include a 70% recycling rate in the US by 2030, and an 80% recycling rate in EMEA in the same timeframe. The company has already reduced the weight of its Aluminium cans by 30% over the past 35 years.
  • One key initiative to improve recycling rates is the Every Can Counts (ECC) campaign, which sees Crown partner with other can makers and aluminium suppliers to raise consumer awareness about the recyclability of metal packaging. The ECC embarked on its second International Recycling Tour in June 2022, with events and social media engagements across Europe and Brazil.
  • Crown’s key product innovations include its PVC-free closure, which can be used in metal lids for both sterilised and pasteurised products. It doesn’t require new manufacturing equipment so can be adopted quickly and easily by brands. Crown Secure is another innovation of note, and stands to improve product transparency and traceability through scannable QR codes that are assigned to every pack at the point of creation.
  • Crown Secure can be used throughout a pack’s manufacturing lifecycle, enabling brands to create a data trail that helps prove authenticity. The codes can also be used as a consumer engagement tool. Brands could push the technology further by incorporating sourcing information and connecting to the blockchain for full transparency.
  • Crown’s net sales reached USD 11.6 billion in 2020 – USD 4.6 billion comes from the Americas, USD 3.7 billion from Europe and USD 1.2 billion from Asia Pacific. Net sales of USD 2 billion comes from its transit packaging division.
  • The company has 200 manufacturing plants as well as sales and service locations across 40 countries, and operates throughout developing economies in Asia, Eastern Europe, South America, the Middle East and North Africa.
  • In 2021, Crown sold its European tinplate business to private equity firm KPS Capital Partners, rebranding as Eviosys. As a result, Crown's main focus is now on beverage packaging, launching Eviosys as Europe's largest manufacturer of Steel and aluminium food packaging. Crown has retained a 20% ownership stake in Eviosys.
  • Crown is headquartered in Pennsylvania, US and has more than 33,000 employees.
