WHAT WE SAY:

Choose Packaging has succeeded where others have stumbled – it has developed a completely plastic-free lining for a paper bottle.

Just three components make up the bottle – a recycled newspaper body supplied by Cullen, a plant-based barrier lining and a recyclable metal cap system. Choose was acquired by HP Inc in 2021, and is now pivoting to help their moulded fibre tooling technology, potentially working on printer cartridges and beyond. Linings are vital for us to give fibre packaging a myriad of uses. This is a great start.

ABOUT CHOOSE PACKAGING

  • Choose Packaging makes plastic-free solutions for everyday plastic products.
  • The company, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, was founded in 2015 by James Longcroft and its primary product is a Paper bottle liner.
  • The body of the Fibre Bottle is manufactured from recycled newspaper and is supplied by Cullen, while the waterproof barrier is a patented mixture of 26 different plant-based materials. The cap system, which includes a screw cap and a threaded neck, can be made from Aluminium, stainless Steel or recycled tinplate, depending on the product being bottled. Labels are made from recycled paper and printed with soy-based inks.
  • The body of the bottle can be recycled with paper or home composted, and the cap system can be recycled.
  • Unlike other paper solutions, such as Paboco's bottle, Choose Packaging’s bottle is verified as plastic-free and the brand claims it is “100% no plastic, bioplastic, or some crazy other plastic derivative.”
  • Choose Packaging’s liner gives us the only commercially available plastic-free paper bottle in the world and the company currently holds six patents including one for ‘biodegradable coatings for biodegradable substrates’, filed in 2018.
  • The company works with retailers and brands to custom design bottles from various pulp companies according to specific requirements. Volumes range from 30 millilitres to one litre, and a variety of sizes and shapes are available.
  • The original Choose lined bottle was initially designed to hold water, however, the company has developed applications across the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, home care and cleaning industries. Feasibility testing is carried out for each new product to ensure the correct lining solution is used and that the packaging is appropriate and safe for the product.
  • Choose Packaging solutions are also available off the shelf. Consumers can buy a 465 millilitre fibre bottle containing either washing up liquid, hand sanitiser or hand soap. Hand soap and washing up liquid bottles are GBP 6.25 (USD 8.20) for three, and hand sanitiser bottles are GBP 11.99 (USD 15.75) for three.
  • Clients can expect Choose Packaging to help set up their own facility for the manufacture of bottles, and custom machinery is available to lease or buy. Existing clients include Accolade Wines, Henkel and Malibu Rum.
  • In February 2022, Choose Packaging was acquired by HP, which will integrate it into its Personalization and 3D Printing business. HP has experience with fibre-based products thanks to its 3D printing-enabled Moulded Fibre Tooling Solution.
  • The technology company intends to scale Choose Packaging’s technology and expand its consumer footprint into new markets.
