WHAT WE SAY:

Small players can make a big impact, especially when their innovation is spotted by some of the most influential brands in the world.

Blue Ocean Closures may be in its infancy, but its dedication to replacing small, single-use plastic bottle lids with paper-based alternatives is set to make a splash. While we’re firm believers that we need to move away from the idea of single-use in its entirety, there will always be a grab-and-go stopgap, and BOC is making that stopgap much more environmentally sound.

ABOUT BLUE OCEAN CLOSURES

  • Blue Ocean Closures (BOC) is a Swedish startup working towards the goal of “putting a cap on plastics.”
  • The company aims to reduce ocean plastic by replacing conventional plastic-based closures with bio-based, biodegradable alternatives.
  • BOC’s key innovation is its Moulded Fibre Screw Cap closure. It has been developed with FSC-sourced fibre material which can be recycled as Paper and will biodegrade in an ocean environment.
  • It is reported to be the first company to have created a fibre-based screw cap solution which is bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable.
  • The company has partnered with Paboco to create a paper closure for the brand’s paper bottles. It’s expected to be commercially available in 2023.
  • In July 2022, the company announced it is also partnering with the Absolut Company to develop a natural, fibre-based cap for Glass Absolut Vodka bottles. Prototyping and testing will take place in 2022, and the product will be shared commercially in 2023.
  • CEO Lars Sandberg has previously worked with packaging giants Stora Enso, Tetra Pak and Billerud.
  • The Blue Ocean Closures screw cap is backed by ALPLA Group (Austria) and Glatfelter (US), and it received the 2022 IDEA Sustainability Advancement Award in May 2022.
