WHAT WE SAY:

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to paper, and Billerud pushes this fibre-based material to new limits, enabling it to effectively and cost comparatively replace plastic.

Dedicated to moving the world away from fossil fuels, we champion the company’s brutal honesty when it comes to society’s reliance on oil, and the fact that plastic is just the oil industry’s Plan B. Boldness is key when convincing the FMCG industries to forgo their love affair with plastic, and Billerud's high-tech paper products are just bold enough. Next step – asking how to partner with the best plastic-free, toxin-free coatings to truly challenge plastic.

ABOUT BILLERUD

  • Billerud is a Swedish Paper and pulp manufacturer that claims to have a net positive effect on the climate through its participation in responsible forest management.
  • The company’s core focus is to replace fossil fuel-based materials with fibre-based, renewable materials sourced from trees, helping to stop society’s dependance on oil.
  • The company estimates that its total positive climate effect is 5.4 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents. This means that its practices – the net sinking of carbon through forests and its minimal use of fossil fuels for manufacturing – combined with the use of its fibre-based products by the industry prevented 5.4 million tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere in 2019 when the LCA was undertaken. This is said to be equivalent to the entire Steel industry in Sweden.
  • Billerud's paper-based packaging solutions are applicable to a wide range of industries, from food and beverage, fashion, cosmetics, consumer electronics, through to the medicine and hygiene industry.
  • Its most innovative product is FibreForm, a 3D, cold-formable paper that can be used to create everything from stand-up pouches to blister packs and cartons. The material has been designed to have increased flexibility – up 20% compared with normal paper. This allows it to be thermoformed too, and used as a replacement for specially-shaped plastic packs.
  • Key innovations using FibreForm include Shaped Paper Pods – right-sized, customised packaging for product samples, refills, portion packs and disposable packaging – suitable for both the food and cosmetic markets.
  • Billerud primarily buys its wood from forest owners in the Nordics with FSC and PEFC certifications. The forests it works with are dedicated to creating carbon sinks and planting more trees than they harvest.
  • The company is currently 97% fossil-free in its own production, and its 2030 and 2050 climate targets – aligned with Science Based Targets and the Paris Agreement – are focused on phasing out the last 3% of fossil fuels it uses. These targets apply to both its own production and its value chain, and it will see a significant reduction in climate impact from its purchasing of chemicals and transport by 2030 – its biggest source of CO2 emissions.
  • The company is continuously assessed by analyst organisations such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), CDP, EcoVadis and Sustainalytics. Billerud is among the top 10% most sustainable companies in the world in the DJSI, and received an EcoVadis Platinum medal in 2021, putting it in the top 1% of businesses analysed. The company received the Gold class distinction for excellent sustainability performance in the SAM Sustainability Yearbook 2021.
  • Billerud used to be known as BillerudKorsnäs, which was the result of a merger between Billerud and Korsnäs in 2012, both of which had been operating in the forestry and paper industry for more than 150 years. The company saw net sales grow by 15% between 2020 and 2021, equating to a net profit of SEK 320 million (USD 31.2 million) in 2021. The company changed its name to Billerud in 2022.
  • The company is one half of joint-venture Paboco, with manufacturing specialist Alpla, which was started in 2019 to look into making the first effective paper bottle.
  • Every year, Billerud runs the Packaging Impact Design Awards (PIDA) where 350 students around the world use the company’s paper products to create innovative and, most notably, sustainable packaging. Regional winners are selected across four categories: Highest Level of Sustainability, Highest Level of Innovation, Highest Level of User Friendliness and the PIDA Gold Award.
