WHAT WE SAY:
The sea of plastic packaging that shrouds our fruit and vegetables in all supermarkets is a miserable sight. Imagine if fresh produce looked… fresh?
Apeel have spent over ten years developing a second skin to retain freshness, reducing both plastic and food waste. A double whammy climate crisis-beating result that also gives us back a gustative shopping experience.

ABOUT APEEL SCIENCES
Apeel Sciences is a California-based company creating a range of edible, plant-based coatings designed to reduce food waste from fresh produce such as avocados, limes, apples and oranges.
The company’s coatings work by slowing the rate of water loss and oxidation from fresh produce, and can extend products’ lifespan by two to three times.
Apeel uses lipids and glycerolipids derived from seeds, pulp and peels of fruit and vegetables to develop its coatings.
The company was founded in 2012 by James Rogers following a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Since then, it has gone on to raise USD 635 million, including a USD 250 million Series E round in August 2021 which valued the company at over USD 2 billion.
Apeel’s grocery partners include Costco, Kroger and Harps Foods in the US, Asda and Tesco in the UK, and EDEKA in Germany.
In mid-2021, the company claimed to have prevented 42 million pieces of fruit from going to waste, saving nearly 4.7 billion litres of water in the process.
