When the big guys move, the market moves. Allied Glass has the potential to put glass as a material back on the sustainable list.
Its ESG goals and actual achievements are stacking up well. We’d like to see more focus on renewable energy throughout the process, and even higher targets for recycled content, but this is an excellent start.

ABOUT ALLIED GLASS
Founded 150 years ago in Yorkshire, Allied Glass is one of the largest UK-based manufacturers of Glass packaging containers for the premium spirits and food and drinks markets. It is EcoVadis Gold Level accredited, awarded to the top 5% of accredited companies.
The company was bought by a global private investment advisory firm – an affiliate of Sun European Partners – in 2020 for an undisclosed sum.
In 2022, it was reported that French glass packaging manufacturer Verallia is to acquire Allied Glass in a GBP 315 million (USD 381 million) deal.
In the three years prior to 2020, Allied Glass doubled its customer base, which includes craft manufacturers and the largest blue chip organisations in the industry, delivering sales growth of 13% per annum. In 2021, the company gained nearly 80 new customers.
Sustainable milestones achieved since 2015 include: 43% increase in the amount of post-consumer cullet; 18% reduction in usage of raw materials; 10.5% reduction in CO2 per tonne and 100% of Allied’s electrical requirement supplied by renewable electricity.
Allied Glass’ 2025 sustainability targets, announced in Q4 2021, include: use of average 51% recycled content; 45% reduction in waste; 50% reduction in water consumption rate; 90% reduction of waste to landfill; 20% improvement in energy efficiency and 20% reduction of carbon emissions per tonne.
2021 awards and accreditations include: UK Packaging Award – Glass Pack of the Year for Shivering Mountain Gin; Glass Focus Awards – Design of the Year for CleanCo CleanT bottle and EcoVadis accreditation gold level.
Allied Glass has developed a recycling process for a mix of coloured glass that is used to produce new and unique glass colours.
In 2014, Allied Glass invested in 3D printing technology, allowing customers to create a bottle from scratch in a few hours.
