THE CHALLENGE

HOW TO REDUCE WATER AND PLASTIC DEPENDENCY IN THE HAIRCARE INDUSTRY

Traditional shampoo and body wash formulas contain between 80 and 90% water, a resource many of us have at home on tap. These water-based products are not only harder to package, with plastic the go-to material of choice, but they also require more energy to be shipped around the world, resulting in high carbon emissions. The Powder Shampoo has removed all water from the production and formulation of its plant-powered haircare and bodycare range, preserving vital fresh water and creating a more potent, longer-lasting product as a result. The powdered products can be simply mixed with water at the point of use, transforming into a foaming formula.

THE SOLUTION

MATERIAL CHOICE
Each bottle from The Powder Shampoo is made entirely from aluminium, including the cap. Aluminium is infinitely and easily recyclable kerbside, with the Aluminium Association claiming that 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today. Aluminium is a lightweight, flexible, strong, non-toxic, and corrosion-resistant material ideal for storing dried goods.
EASY REFILLS
Each bottle can be reused and refilled using the brand's spouted refill packs made purely from paper. The brand uses no glue to seal the packs, or plastic to line them with thanks to the absence of water in the formula. The pouches can be recycled in the paper waste stream or home composted.
WATERLESS FORMULAS
By removing water from its formulas The Powder Shampoo creates a more potent, faster acting product derived entirely from ingredients with proven hair and skincare benefits. Using nature derived ingredients, including 25 botanics and eight micro-encapsulated oils, the sulfate, silicone, paraben, phthalate, and synthetic fragrance-free products are better for the body and the environment.
“We consume an average of 10 shampoo bottles each year. Switching to The Powder Shampoo saves 50 litres of clean water per person, per year."

HOW TO ACTION

1

Prove with data

The Powder Shampoo claims its products have a significantly better impact than water-based formulas. To gain trust and consumer loyalty the addition of third-party verified data would solidify this claim and prove the brand's commitment.

2

Discuss the details

The brand advises consumers to compost its refill packs. Composting isn't a straightforward practice and can vary dramatically, so a detailed how-to guide would add credibility. Video footage showing how the pack breaks down and in what time frame is also advised.

3

Watch your water footprint

The use of toxic, plastic-based ingredients in beauty formulas is another way the industry impacts our waterways. These ingredients enter water systems via household drains and have a proven effect on ocean life and the quality of our drinking water. Remove plastic from products now.
