And while we are a long way from Spinnova making up a significant part of your wardrobe, it is hugely encouraging to see adidas launching its first commercially available product using a blended Spinnova fibre. We are already waiting for the full range.
There is little value in using Spinnova’s chemical-free fibre that biodegrades benignly, if you then blend it with fibres that do not have a similar profile or apply treatments, trims or labels that negate this at the garment’s end-of-life.
While Spinnova offers encouraging environmental metrics, it is still a new fibre with limited production volumes. Currently it is only available to selected partners for limited edition collaborations, meaning it risks being a mere fig leaf for bigger brands.
adidas is attempting to get around Spinnova’s limited availability by becoming an investor in the company. This illustrates a broader truth: forward-thinking brands are making deep, long-term commitments in innovative new materials and you will be left behind if you move tentatively.
